Here are our top 15 winter garden tips you can do this month. Ideal to help set up your garden for the remainder of the year and the next season.
We wanted to share some tips and tricks with you that you can get busy doing in your garden to support the heath of your trees, plants, flowers, and vegetables.
As winter approaches, there are some things you can do in your garden to prepare for spring and to help your garden thrive during the colder months.
Vegetable beds will benefit from a generous application of compost at this time of year.
Such as corn and tomatoes so you can prepare planting ready for winter. Winter options could include; chicory, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, parsley, spinach, garlic, silverbeet, carrots, broad beans, and celeriac.
Plant new trees and shrubs as there are specific trees that will benefit from winter planting. (Visit your local garden centre to ask for ideas on which trees are best to plant at this time of year).
Spring-blooming bulbs, such as tulips and daffodils, should be planted in June or July when the soil temperatures have cooled. Summer-blooming beauties such as dahlia and gladiolus are best planted in the spring after all danger of frost has passed. Refer to bhg.com
Perennials are not demanding plants, but trimming them after flowering finishes in autumn helps improve their appearance and flowering. However, you can leave some stems over winter to provide homes and food for wildlife, and then trim back in spring. Refer to rhs.org.uk
Compost fallen leaves, grass clippings, kitchen scraps and shredded pruning’s.

Consider landscaping projects that you have been wanting to start such as building raised vegetable beds or redesigning your garden layout.
Consider planting NZ native trees or other trees such as fruit trees or deciduous ornamentals.
Perennials can be lifted and divided at this time in readiness for spring.

Pruning and thinning out trees in the winter garden can benefit by allowing more sunlight to reach the ground, reducing the risk of snow and ice damage, improving air circulation, and promoting the healthy growth of the remaining branches.
To prepare for winter planting in the vegetable garden, crops that are no longer producing or have reached maturity, such as tomatoes, beans, and cucumbers, should be removed. This will free up space for winter crops such as spinach, lettuce, and kale, which can tolerate cooler temperatures.
