Learn from our tree rigging workshops in 2016. Every year Pro Climb provides public tree rigging workshops in Auckland and in house training throughout New Zealand.
These Arboricultural tree rigging workshops are for the professional tree climbers and arborists.
Tree rigging workshops for basic tree rigging to advanced levels
Tree rigging is the art of manually dismantling trees using ropes, blocks and pulleys. It can be used for dropping large pieces of timber into a tight drop zones where impact has to either be kept to a minimum or eliminated entirely. Or it can allow the arborist to balance and control awkwardly shaped limbs into a designated drop zone.
Tree rigging is possibly one of the most complex tasks in tree work and involves a vast range of knowledge on subjects. Such as physics, wood properties, equipment ratings, rope strengths and good working communications between a large group of staff members.

Tree Rigging can be as basic as throwing a rope through a branch union and attaching it to the branch to be removed. You need a person on the ground to hold the end of the rope and the tree climber professional will remove the branch. The branch is then lowered down to the ground by the grounds person.
This tree rigging technique is as old as arboriculture itself. This tree rigging technique requires a fit and strong grounds person to hold the weight of the branch. The tree climber professional must be able to judge the weight of the large branches in relation to the strength of the rope.
This technique however also adds in variables that are hard to account for. For example how much force the grounds person is required to hold the weight of the large branch. Also how much friction is being applied to the branch union by the lowering rope.
Tree Rigging Definition
- Tree rigging is used for removing large branches or an entire large tree. Tree roping techniques are used to provide greater control and better efficiency for large tree removal. It is very important to ensure low impact tree removals using modern tree rigging techniques.
- Tree rigging primary function is for the tree climbing safety and to ensure the safety of the environment.
Pro Climb provides advanced arborist training in tree rigging technique, professional tree climbing and aerial rescue. All arborist training is offered in-house or at our public workshop locations. The aim of our training is to increase work productivity, workplace safety and to comply with all Health and Safety regulations.
