Pro Climb Arborists and Pro Climb were recently contracted by a tree planting company called Plant People to aid them with a tree planting company project on the site of a new development taking place in Orewa.
The scope of the tree planting project would involve a number of different sites in their development phase being planted out with native trees and shrubs. Some of the sites in question were comprised of steep banks and escarpments which were unsuitable for traditional planting methods, requiring rope access support to plant them successfully and safely. Learn how our horticultural abseiling team assisted in the Plant People tree planting company.
We undertook Crucial Safety Assessment Measures
Due to the size of the project and the nature of the work, a safe work method statement was provided before any work took place detailing how the sites would be accessed and the safety measures that would be taken. This also involved how workers would be rescued in the case of an emergency.
As the site was for the most part bare land, there was a lack of structures that could be used as anchor points for ropes. It was decided that the most appropriate solution in this case would be to use vehicles. Measures had to be taken and procedures put in place to ensure the vehicles would be securely locked out of action whilst any ropes were attached to it. Information also had to be gained on suitable loading for the vehicles to ensure they were not exposed to loads beyond their limits.
This set up made us highly mobile and allowed us to travel between the sites easily and set up in a very short amount of time. This flexibility meant we could change work sites quickly to work around other projects on site keeping productivity high and constant.
The Tree Planting Company Project Result:
By the end of the project tens of thousands of plants had been put in the ground, transforming a barren development site into something that will grow and flourish into the future. The roots of the plants will help to stabilise the soil and protect the water ways on the site from erosion. As they were native plants, local wildlife will benefit as the plants provide food and shelter that appeals to native species.
This slightly different approach to rope work helps us to hone our skills and use problem solving which transfers back to the tree work that we predominantly do. Planting trees as an Arborist is always good karma and ensures a healthy supply of trees for future generations.
