Seven Sustainability Projects That Improve the Planet

01/08/2017 by Rossy

This blog will highlight a few sustainability projects I have come across recently that are helping to improve the planet using trees. It is hard to deny that humans are pretty good at creating problems in the world. The flip side of this is that they are also pretty good at solving them too.

Plant a Tree For FREE using the Internet

Did you know that by clicking a button on your mouse you can plant a tree… for free? Well, you can. There is a new search engine that is free to use called Ecosia. Search engines generate income by selling advertising. Ecosia also does this but it uses the money to fund tree planting projects around the globe. Amongst other things, these projects are important for restoring habitats, biodiversity, land stabilisation, nutrition and employment. There is a running total of the trees planted on their website and information about the projects they are involved with. They have a goal of planting 1 billion trees worldwide by 2020.

Trees That Count are targeting 4.7 million Trees in 2017

In November 2016, Trees That Count was launched. Funded by The Tindall Foundation, and delivered by the Project Crimson Trust in partnership with Pure Advantage and the Department of Conservation, Trees That Count aims to keep a live count of the number of native trees being planted across the country from 2017 and to set a new target each year thereafter. In 2016, they worked with 20 groups to plant 75,000 native trees. For 2017 they want to see one tree planted for every New Zealander, that’s 4.7 million trees. You can learn how to get involved at www.treesthatcount.co.nz

Auckland Council has an Urban Forestation Programme

Phil Goff has announced an urban forestation programme for Auckland which aims to plant a million, predominantly native, trees and shrubs across the region over three years. The goal is to green our city, offset carbon emissions, protect our water quality by planting along rivers and coastlines and improve our living environment. Auckland Council will budget $1 million each year to fund its contribution to the Million Trees Programme. The fund will be used to provide practical support and coordination and to expand existing planting programmes. We will off-set costs by partnering with government agencies, NGOs, private sector sponsors, iwi and other groups.
