Regular tree care maintenance case study. Don’t delay, make sure your trees are inspected and managed every year. If you know where to look it is possible to find peace and tranquillity in even the busiest environments. A perfect example of this is The Pines Apartments located in Epsom in the heart of Auckland.
Slap bang in the middle of all the hustle and bustle are seven acres of landscaped gardens with beautiful trees and wide open lawns. The pines gives us a glimpse back to the earlier days when Auckland was a new emerging city with plenty of space available.
Pro Climb was recently contacted by The Pines to manage their tree stock.
We jumped at the chance to work in this prestigious environment and be part of its history.
“The Pines has forty apartments, sitting on about 2.7 hectares (approx 7 acres) on the south-eastern slopes of Mt Eden. The Pines looks after several ‘scheduled’ trees, which are trees listed in the Auckland Council plan as being significant to the city. In addition, a part of the grounds is now designated a ‘Special Ecological Area (Terrestrial)’, because of its value (along with the domain, Eden Gardens, and Government House gardens) as a habitat for birds and other fauna.” – The Pines website
The current use of the land dates back to 1856 when it was granted to pioneer Andrew Sinclair. Since then it has passed through several hands each taking good care of it along the way.
Some of the planting dates back to the 1860’s with several mature specimens surviving to the present day.
George Burgoyne Owen and Thomas Bannatyne Gillies are responsible for much of the planting. The main goal of the project is to maintain and preserve the hard work that has gone into The Pines and ensure its success long into the future. The land use has change throughout its lifetime which must be a consideration of how the trees are managed.
The majority of the work has been the removal of broken branches and deadwood which could pose a hazard to the residents. Pruning has also taken place to allow space for individual trees to grow unencumbered and to create strong forms for the future.
There have been a few situations where trees have had to be removed.
This is because they have died and are in too close a proximity to buildings or public spaces to be left to decay. Specialist rigging techniques have been used to safely dismantle these trees without causing damage to the pristine gardens beneath.
This is another one of those jobs that is a tree climbers dream.
Climbing all the way out to the tips of mature trees with beautiful landscaped gardens beneath and the city on the horizon. The Pines will be an on-going project of ours as sites like this benefit greatly from regular maintenance programs.
It is our experience that regular maintenance is the most cost effective approach for improving the health of your trees. We have found that via regular maintenance the amount of work that needs doing at each visit actually decreases over time as the health and condition of the trees improve.
We have experience of providing regular maintenance programs on both large and small scales. Have a chat with us about how a maintenance program could be the best option for your tree stock.
