Importance of Pruning for the Winter Sun

08/06/2017 by Rossy

The importance of pruning cannot be understated. As winter approaches and the sun gets lower in the sky you can often find that your once sunning section has now become shaded. The small patch of shade that your trees cast in the summer months now cover most of your garden making the space feel quite enclosed. This blog will discuss the importance of pruning and some options for people who find themselves in this position wishing they could get a bit more light to their garden whilst retaining the greenery. Make sure to also check out our tree pruning services today.

Importance of Pruning for the Winter Sun

Step 1: Assess what is in your Garden

The first step is to really take stock of your garden and see what you have to work with. If possible identify the different trees and shrubs in your garden and determine what their function is. This could range from providing a privacy screen, to forming a wind break, shading summer sun, providing wildlife habitat, or simply offering something nice to look at.

Step 2: Identify the main Offenders

The next step is to identify the main offenders; which trees or shrubs are the one’s casting the most shade. Try and do this at different times throughout the day. As the sun moves you may find that certain trees block the light for longer periods of time than others. Also, consider if you would normally be around at these times when the shade is being cast.

Step 3: Compare and decide what needs to be pruned

Once you have this information compare it together and see how one affects the other. If you are lucky you may find that the worst offending trees in terms of shade do not offer any other function in the garden, which may make the decision to prune or remove easier. However, this is often not the case. This is when in can be a good idea to involve an Arborist. An experienced Arborist will be able to offer solutions to your specific situation. Trees can be pruned in a variety of ways, depending on how the sun tracks through the sky, so that they can retain their function whilst decreasing the amount of shade they cast. There may not always be a perfect solution but in many case the light fall to the property can be increased.

The importance of pruning cannot be overlooked. Something important to consider is will the tree still retain its functions in the other seasons of the year. Overlooking this may result in your garden being too exposed during the summer. Again, a skilled Arborist will be able to advise you on this.

As the days draw short it can be tempting to head out into the garden and get hacking but a bit of time spent planning can be well worth it. By taking time to assess your tree stock and its function you can create a garden that serves all of your needs all year round.

The Importance of Pruning Your Trees

Tree pruning is an important task that should undertaken by every property owner. Pruning helps with the long term health of the trees and plants in your area. Tree pruning is often undertaken as large trees can become hazardous to the people around them. Tree pruning also allows you to shape the tree to be more aesthetically pleasing and often pruning is used to reduce the blocking of the sun onto your property. We recommend pruning in mid – late Winter or late Summer.
