3. Plant new trees for your winter garden

Plant new trees and shrubs as there are specific trees that will benefit from winter planting. (Visit your local garden centre to ask for ideas on which trees are best to plant at this time of year).

4. Plant bulbs for winter and spring flowering

Spring-blooming bulbs, such as tulips and daffodils, should be planted in June or July when the soil temperatures have cooled. Summer-blooming beauties such as dahlia and gladiolus are best planted in the spring after all danger of frost has passed. Refer to bhg.com

5. Cut back dead or withered summer flowers

Perennials are not demanding plants, but trimming them after flowering finishes in autumn helps improve their appearance and flowering. However, you can leave some stems over winter to provide homes and food for wildlife, and then trim back in spring. Refer to rhs.org.uk

6. Compost fallen leaves for winter garden

Compost fallen leaves, grass clippings, kitchen scraps and shredded pruning’s.
